01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Situated on the 2nd floor of the kaiwai akasaka food hall along Misuji-dori in Akasaka, Sushi Hoitsu Akasaka serves authentic Edomae-style nigiri in an approachable counter setting. The kitchen avoids unnecessary novelty, letting meticulous prep work shine—such as delicate crosshatch scoring on squid that releases its natural sweetness while bonding smoothly with the sushi rice. Across the counter, the friendly chef shapes each piece to match the diner's pace, balancing casual comfort with the quiet focus of a traditional sushi bar.

The centerpiece of the evening menu is the Taisho Omakase course. Following a warming bowl of shijimi clam soup, the sequence moves through medium-fatty bluefin tuna (chutoro), gizzard shad (kohada), and tender house-made simmered sea eel, alongside a small hand roll and home-style rolled omelet. A distinct feature of this set is that guests may select 2 additional pieces of nigiri according to personal preference. Other course options range from the accessible Aoi and Shun sets to the expansive Hoitsu Course, accommodating different times and appetites.

For those wanting a few extra bites after a course or preferring to choose freely, nigiri can be ordered a la carte starting from 1 piece. Options span casual favorites such as tamago and squid tentacles up to kelp-cured natural fluke, thread-sail filefish topped with its liver, and fresh sea urchin. Seasonal dishes like stuffed horsehair crab shell, abalone steak, and lean whale sashimi also feature on the menu, making it easy to tailor a meal alongside beer, wine, or sake.
